What is a wetland? It is not a dry land. It is not a lake. It is some of both! There are many kinds of wetlands.
A marsh has plants. They have grass and reeds. A swamp has trees growing in the water. A bog has lots of moss. A fen also has moss. They have reeds too. All of those places are wet! Many things live in wetlands. Fish live in the water. Tiny, baby fish hide in the reeds. They live there until they are bigger.
Frogs also like the water. They eat flies. They also eat bugs. There are many things to eat. In the spring, frogs sing. They lay eggs that become tadpoles. Tadpoles are baby frogs. They hide in the reeds. They grow legs. They look like frogs.
Ducks like the water too. They nest on wetlands. Ducks swim. Ducklings swim. Egrets walk in the water. They do not swim. They have long legs. They eat fish and frogs. Turtles like hot days. They lay on logs. They sleep in the sun. Many things live in wetlands. Some are bugs. Some are birds. Some are animals. Some are reptiles.
Why are wetlands good? Wetlands hold water. They help stop floods. Wetlands clean the water. Dirty water runs in. It can hurt lakes. Plants clean it. Plants make it safe. Some people do not like wetlands. They pour in dirt. They kill the plants. They kill the frogs and fish. The birds fly away. The wetland is gone.
Wetlands are good. They must be saved. They help clean our water. They help clean our air. They stop floods. Wetlands can be fun. You can fish. You can hunt. You can ride in boats. You can do many things. Wetlands are home to birds. Wetlands are home to animals. Wetlands help us. We must take care of them. ------------------------------------------------------- Do you know all highlighted words in orange - go to google in another tab, and click images - then type or copy and paste the words and you can see pictures - a picture is worth a thousand words - this is a much easier way to understand the difference between these types of wetlands. 1.
