Millennials - The Era Has Just Begun

By Jason Dorsey

The Millennials are here and they are making their own demands and stating their clear vision. They have started to define their own trends and making a big impact with marketers, retailers, advertisers and politicians. Many are even now buying cars, houses, investing. Many will get married and have families of their own. They will really make an impact on the American business and economics.

This Millennials was the time between the periods 1977 to 1998. Today there are nearly 80 million of them. This generation has been raised as the most child centric time of our history. It is due to the high expectation from the parents and the attention they had when they were kids that made this set of generation displays a great deal of self confidence. This generation is technically highly literate and has been brought up in a tech savvy environment with the latest electronic gadgets like the computer and PDA's.

Millennials are mostly non traditional. They are not at all cynical about getting married and raising families. They do not want to make the mistakes made by the earlier Generation X and the Boomers.

Millennials are mostly team-oriented getting together to socialize rather than try to pair together. They best work together in groups and prefer this setup to work individually. They are excellent at multi tasking having juggled school with sports along with a social life when they were kids. This makes them extremely hardworking. They however expect to work in an organized workplace. They respect designations and want to have a good relationship at work with the superiors.

You should remember that the Millennials are new to the workplace which is a professional environment. They would therefore need some good mentoring and coaching no matter what kind of confidence level they exhibit. You can be absolutely sure that they will respond very well to any personal attention you give the Millennials. Since they respect a structured approach, the meetings organized with the Millennials should well planned and the message must be conveyed in a more authoritative style.

You could give them a lot of challenges but you will need to provide a structure to back it up. So you will need to break down the goals to small tasks and you should be ready to provide the necessary information and resources needed to accomplish the task assigned. It is preferable to coach the Millennials in groups because they are excellent team players.

Everything is not a bed of roses for these Millennials. Even the shrewdest among the members of this generation will find the options given to them by the marketers confusing. They feel that they know everything and need not take anyone's help. They feel that they can get all the information they need online.

There is a high chance of the Millennials making the wrong decisions, the reason being that this generation has seen nothing but prosperity. If given the choice of paying the premiums for the health insurance or making some saving in a mutual fund or in a bank deposit thereby giving up on the luxuries of a social life or some new technology gadgets, this generation will prefer foregoing the bills.

The Millennials have the desire and intention to transform the planet we live in to make it a better place for future generations. They really sense the joy when they feel that they have made at least a small start in this direction. Their beverage of choice is considered to be wine. Just as wine is considered to be the civilizing drink which is critical to the health, the Millennials considers the drinking of the wine more important than paying of their debt!
