Vocabulary

Welcome to the vocabulary section

Unless you teach children, or have children we're quite sure you will be very surprised about just how many words kids learn each day !

Starting in 1st grade – children are learning 6 new words A DAY ! And that is just in their English class which does not include other subjects ! That’s 24 words a week, and since a U.S. school year is 36 week - that’s 864 words a year !

By the time a 12 year old child finishes 6th grade they should know at least 5,184 words at a minimum (if they are at grade level).

You will be interested to know that if you can read at 6th grade level you will be qualified to read most all tabloid style newspapers. As an example, here in NYC, that would be papers like the NY Daily News and the NY Post.  However to read papers like the NY Times or Wall Street Journal, your skills will have to be much higher. Those papers would be considered suited for high school students and higher.

In this area you can find some vocabulary from different content areas, in addition to some core lists of words that are must be known at certain grade levels for American school children. Also included are several vocabulary builder databases.
